Switzerland’s best-loved castle will fall into darkness for an hour next Saturday. From 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Feldschlösschen will switch off the lighting of the castle in Rheinfelden. In doing so, Switzerland’s leading brewery is taking part in the worldwide initiative called «Earth Hour 2010», thereby sending a positive signal for climate protection. Apart from this symbolic act, Feldschlösschen is constantly involved in concrete measures for a sustainable use of resources and energy, as environment and energy management have a long tradition in the company.
For once, the castle will not be visible to passing motorists and train passengers in the night, because Feldschlösschen will switch off the lighting of the castle next Saturday between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. as a part of «Earth Hour 2010». In participating in the worldwide initiative «Earth Hour 2010», Feldschlösschen is sending a positive signal for climate protection.
The objective of «Earth Hour» is to draw attention to the necessity of climate protection. Therefore, on 27 March 2010, cities around the world will switch off the lights of their landmarks for one hour. In 2009 more than 4,000 cities around the globe took part: Tokyo, Paris and New York, as well as Zurich, Bern, Basel and Geneva. It is estimated that «Earth Hour» reached about one billion people.
Concrete measures for the sustainable use of resources
«Feldschlösschen is aware of its ecological responsibility, and acts accordingly,» explains Roland Büttiker, Production Manager at Feldschlösschen. «That is why we are participating in ‹Earth Hour› and switching off the lights of our landmark for one hour. Apart from this symbolic act, it is important to us to promote the sustainable use of resources and energy with concrete measures throughout the year.»
Feldschlösschen has a long tradition of environment and energy management, and was the first Swiss brewery to be certified for quality and environment. Switzerland’s leading brewery opts for environment-friendly distribution by rail and promotes new, innovative technologies.
Innovative solutions for more environmental protection
One example of the successful search for innovative environmental solutions is the plant for the thermal utilisation of residual alcohol, which accumulates during the production of alcohol-free or alcohol-reduced beers. Thanks to the generation of heat from concentrated alcohol, Feldschlösschen is able to reduce its consumption of natural gas considerably. On the whole, this plant covers around 12% of the brewery’s thermal requirement.
Owing to these and other measures, Feldschlösschen was able to reduce its CO2 emission considerably last year (6.8%) by using fossil fuels. In the coming years the company plans to further reduce CO2 by 4% per annum.
